We have been in Monemvasia for five days, waiting for a weather window to pass the south of the Peloponnese on our way to Sicily. The weather hasn't been kind to us, with thunderstorms, high winds and torrential rain. This is not the first time we have been stuck here storm bound, but if you have to be stuck anyway, Monemvasia is as good as anywhere.
We’ve been sailing in company with our good friends, Nico and Sonja on Snow Goose, who we know from some years back, and are also on their way to Sicily. We need to be on the west side of the Peloponnese, 110 miles and across its three Capes that stretch out South before Wednesday night ,otherwise we will be stuck. Again waiting for another weather window.
Our problem is this: Although this morning we will have some NW winds to help us to Cap Maleas, once rounded the wind will swing around to the SW which means it will be impossible to sail the way we want to go. So unless we are prepared to motor into the wind and seas for 37 miles, our only other option is to sail north west in between the second and third leg, going out of our way for 20 miles and making it more difficult for us to be in Pilos by Wednesday night.
